GIFT EVENING

BUSS JEAN SMITH HONOURED A most enjoyable gift evening was held in the Forester’s Hall, at Patea, on Saturday, in honour of Miss Jean Smith, whose marriage to Mr. H. Kearney takes place shortly. The guest of honour, on entering the hall, was accorded musical honours and presented with a dainty spray of white blossoms and fern. She was wearing a gown fuchsia cire taffetas trimmed with silver lame and her mother, Mrs. W. B. Smith, wore a frock of black cloque patterned in white. The three hostesses were Misses Nellie Carey (green and white taffeta), Joan Clark (briar rose craquella), and Margaret Naismitn (green taffeta trimmed with white). Dancing was enjoyed to music played by Mr. M. Fairweather, extras being played by Mr. J. Sampson, who was also M.C. Items were given during the evening by Miss A. Hall (recitation), Miss J. Nelson (pianoforte solo), and Mr. M. Fairweather (Conjuring). A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Nelson and partner and a statue waltz by Miss L. Wainwright and Mr. T. Hills. After a dainty supper had been served, Mr. Sampson, on behalf of those present asked the guest of honour to accept the gifts her friends had brought with their best wishes for a happy future. Mr. W. B. Smith, in the absence of Mr. Kearney, on behalf of Miss Smith, thanked everybody for their good wishes and gifts. The happy task of opening the many parcels then ensued, a large variety being displayed. Dancing was enjoyed until midnight when the singing of Auld Lang Syne brought a jolly evening to a close.
