LORD NUFFIELD

THREE-DAY VISIT TO DOMINION * DOES NOT THINK THERE BILL BE WAR [ Per Press Association, f WELLINGTON, March 6. Lord Nuffield arrived by the Awatea on his sixth visit to the Dominion. He will spend only three days in New Zealand, going to Palmerston North to-morrow and then on to Napier returning to Wellington via the Wairarapa and leaving by the Rangitiki on Thursday. Lord Nuffield said his trip was in keeping with his policy of keeping in touch with conditions in the Dominions. He said Britain was busy. The rearming programme would not be cut off suddenly but would slacken so that industrial production would gradually replace it. Britain was busier than any other country. He did not think there was going to be any war. Mr. Neville Chamberlain’s idea was to prevent any further bloodshed. When people suggested that Mr. Chamberlain was afraid—"We all are”—Britain was rearming not to fight but to prevent fighting and her rearmament was faster than anybody else's. If he thought there was going to be war he would not be away out here. International affairs were evolving to a degree that if a war was started the rest of the world would be against the aggressor nation. Lord Nuffield thought Mr. Chamberlain was responsible for America’s present international attitude. He made reference to Jewish refugees. Britain was taking a larg proportion and he thought the Dominions would be better off if they took a fair number of the better class, who were nearly all people of high education and could teach us something. He had noticed some on his trip out and was surprised to find that they were of such a desirable type.
