BULLET-PROOF MAIL

FRENCH INVENTOR'S CLAIM. SUCCESSFUL TESTS MADE. LONDON, Feb. 9. Soldiers will be able to march lo any future war in bullet-proof uniforms. if the claims of a French inventor prove to be justified. His invention is now being tested by the French military authorities. The inventor, a young student at one of the military colleges, claims that his “chain armour” cannot be pierced by rifle or machine-gun bullets unless fired at close range. A number of experiments on dummy figures have been carried out secretly at military centres under the eyes of Army chiefs, and the results are said to justify the claim that casualties can be reduced considerably by the use of the mail. The Army chiefs have reported to the Government in favour of subsidising the inventor, and the recommendation has been accepted. From now on the student will be gfven an assured income from the Government and have all the scientific resources of the State at his command. The Government is taking extraordinary precautions to prevent the

identity of the inventor leaking out and to guard against the possible theft of his secret. His laboratory is located in the centre of one of the entrenched camps around Paris, and no person is allowed to approach it.
