TRIANGULAR SPORTS TOURNAMENT

LOCAL PUBLIC SERVANTS DRAW FOR TO-MORROW’S • TENNIS Wellington-West Coast public servants are launching an annual triangular sports tournament which this year will take the form of a tennis competition between the three services —Post and Telegraph, Railways, and the remaining combined State departments in the district. Public servants in Wellington already conduct a'triangular tournament which includes tennis, athletics, and swimming, and with a view to establishing a similar tournament for Wellington-West Coast public servants a strong local branch of the Public Service Sports Tournament Society Inc., of Wellington, has been formed for the express purpose of sponsoring a similar annual tournament for the West Coast (North Island) district. The events are open to any public servant in the employ of the above departments, and includes the Army and Navy and Air Departments. Although the executive was formed as recently as February 14 last, it says much for its capabilities when it is seen that the details for the first annual tennis triangular tourney has been finalised and that the Wanganui Amateur Athletic Association is including special Public Service events for public servants, on Saturday night, on Cook’s Gardens, the 25th. instant when the west coast cycling championships take place. A handsome shield carved by the late T. H. Heberley, who was the Maori carver attached to the Dominion Museum, Wellington, has been donated for competition and although it may not be possible to arrange any swimming events this year the shield, which is called the “Pononui Shield” (‘‘Faith and Trust”), will be awarded to the department obtaining the most points in the tennis and athletic events.
