HIGH CASTE BRILLIANT

i EASY WIN IN SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES EL GOLEA SCORES IN NEWMARKET KING'S CUP TO MARAUDER Received March 5, 9.30 p.m MELBOURNE, March The weather was warm and line, and there was an excellent attendance for the opening day of the Flemingtpn meeting on Saturday. Sunday newspapers, commenting on Saturday’s Flemington meeting, declare El Golea’s win in the Newmarket Handicap was a triumph for form. His stable connections were most confident after his great race behind Ajax in the Futurity Stakes. High praise is also given to the New Zealander, High Caste, who won the Sires' Produce Stakes in convincing fashion. Turf writers agree that High Caste has the remaining rich autumn two-year-old races at his mercy. Melbourne critics state that High Caste proved himself one of the best colts of the present decade by his effortless victory in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. Zonda ran a game race and Aurania finished well. Wilson was disappointing. El Golea was always prominent and registered a brilliant win in the Newmarket. Aurie's Star gave an excellent performance under big weight. Kamuri surprised by his forward running. The placed horses finished alongside the inside rail. El Golea, who finished third in the Newmarket last year, was purchased in the early spring by the Hon. A. Crofts, for one thousand

guineas, and is proving a rare bargain. The Hon. Crofts purchased several horses at the New Zealand yearling sales. Amiable made a good effort to finish fourth. The Trump was never dangerous. The Adelaide-owned and trained Celtic King outclassed his rivals in the Pines Hurdle ano. shaped like a National possibility.

Firewood had a comfortable win in the Victoria Steeplechase, in which the former New Zealander Midacre broke down. Wakerife fell. In an exciting run to the post Marauder finished brilliantly to win the King’s Cup. O'Sullivan was originally engaged to ride Marauder but asked to be relieved on the previous day in order to ride Respirator, who ran a good race. Pageant finished well. Bourbon went a good race. Spear Chief had a poor run, and nearly fell a furlong from the post. Marauder is owned by the bookmaker Wallace Mitchell. The West Australian owned anil trained Tetreen gave a smart performance to lead throughout in the Brunswick Stakes. Tempest finished well but just failed. Micawber ran a good third. Tetreen is trained by J. Kelly, who claims seven Perth Cup winners. Results:—
