CUP TO PEERLESS

TAITORU SURPRISES RANGITIKEI RACING CLUB SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE AT BULLS The Rangitikei Racing Club's autumn meeting was held on Saturday in brilliantly fine weather and there was a very big attendance. Tile course was hard and the scratching pen was used more freely than expected. The Helds were good, however, and the racing was interesting throughout, the Cup being won by Peerless in record time, and the Bailey Memorial Handicap by Taitoru. The totalisator handled £14,736 during the day, as against £12.637 for the corresponding meeting last year, the increase being £2099. Ruling Star Scores in Close Finish. There was a close finish in the Trial Plate and the short-priced favourite, Ruling Star, just got up to win from Snigger and Prinihia. it was a good start but Bridegroom and Kio were slow to find their feet and Snigger and Prinihia were first to show out. Then Cuddler and Renascor raced to the front to lead from Prinihia and Snigger with Kio and Ruling Star next. Cuddler led crossing the top but was headed by Snigger at the home turn, and Prinihia and Ruling Star early threw out challenges. Snigger looked likely at the distance but Ruling Star and Prinihia made final efforts ?hid Ruling Star won from Snigger by a neck with Prinihia only a head further back. Cuddler was close up fourth and Travail and Bridegroom were next. Hanover Wins Well. Lady Stella was favourite for the hurdles but the dividends were returned by Hanover and Entheos. the latter being bracketed with Princess Isabel. Hanover was in front for most of the way and the only time the favourite really looked like winning was when she held the lead for a short distance about half a mile from home. Doctor Defoe fell at the second fence and Princess Isabel dislodged her rider at the third. There were only four left in it at the finish and Entheos made a last desperate bid for victory, getting to within a length of the winner. Entheos was very lame when he was pulled up. Taumau and Lady Stella were together behind Hanover going to the first obstacle but both made faulty jumps and lost ground. Nice Effort by Trebor. The hack sprint was won by Trebor who took charge half-way down the straight and went on to a decisive victory’ from Copy Cat, who cut the pacemaker, Deficit, out of second money. When the field had settled down, Deficit was in charge, followed by Filetto. Le Marquis, Aurora's Star. Copy Cat, Red Cat and Trebor, who had dropped back. The order into the straight was Deficit, from Filetto, Copy Cat. and Le Marquis, and Trebor settled it a hunared yards from home. Then Copy Cat challenged Deficit, and beat him to the judge by half a length. Filetto was fourth, followed by Gold Band. Le Marquis and Brazil in a rough line. Peerless Won in Record Time. Dungarvan and Play On were withdrawn from the Cup race, which was won by Peerless in record time, and when she passed the judge she was only’ a long neck in front of Dainty Sue and Galtcemore. It was a grand finish. Roval Choice set out to make t.ie pace and with six furlongs covered he was four lengths in front of Golden Ridge, followed by Peerless, Gaitccmore and Brazen King, and Dainty sue was moving through. Peerless had the race won inside the distance hut she had to be ridden right out to win by a neck from Dainty Sue, who made a final dab to beat Galteemore by the narrowest possible margin. Golden Ridge, w ho did not appear to relish the hard going, was fourt.l and Royal Choice was next. Mataroa Beats Sudan. Sudan was a hot favourite for the Greatford Hack Handicap but she did not appear to relish the going, and although she looked a winner until within half a furlong from home she could not withstand Mataroa s second challenge and she was beaten bv a head. • Te Huia was the early leader but when they turned into the bacK stretch Yed Prior had charge followed by Te Huia. Sudan, Mataroa, Karerenui and Amatory. Yed Prior was well clear at the five but they went after her and Sudan turned for home ahead of Yed Prior, Karerenui and Mataroa. Sudan looked a winner at the distance but Mataroa finished resolutely and he got up to win by’ a head. Yed Prior was third, three lengths back, a head in front of Amatory. Te Huia was last. Taitoru Finishes Brilliantly. The veteran. Taitoru, showed a return to his old form when he swept up in the straight and beat Taurangi and Lady Ina in the Bailey Memorial. It was a fast run race and there was no fluke about Taitoru s victory.

Taurangi was first to break the line but she soon gave way to Mittie and Lady Ina who led down the back. Approaching the three Ruling Spi moved forward to follow Lady Ina into the straight, with Taurangi, Mittie and Taitoru next. Taurangi soon threw out a challenge and then Taitoru came up on the outer and in a good finish Taitoru won by half a length from Taurangi who got up just in time to nose Lady Ina out of second money. Ruling Spi was fourth.

One for Drachma. Vadanoe and Haile Selassie jumped out smartly and were the early pacemakers. At the five furlongs Thrasos worked through to the front and led Haile Selassie, Earl Colossus, Vadanoe. Drachma, and Rarotonga. In a good finish Drachma, on the outer, got up to win by over a length from the dead-heaters. Results were: — TRIAL PLATE. (Of £100; six furlongs). 1— Ruling Star (Mr. G. F.
