FROZEN MEAT TRADE

LAMB PRICES SLIGHTLY LOWER CHILLED BEEF WEAK Lamb market: Again shade easier, but lower prices stimulating consumption. Mutton market: Wethers and ewes trade slow with prices heavyweights lower. Beef market: Frozen beef, demand quiet; prices Inclined to weaken. Chilled beef, demand slow owing to Lent, with heavy supplies. New Zealand porker pigs: Lightweights easier; mediumweights firmer. Demand quiet. New Zealand baconer pigs: Market quiet and unchanged. The above report was received by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield market. Prices for the previous week are shown in parentheses:— New Zealand sheep: Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 481 b and under, 4 5-8 d (4 5-8 d); 491 b to 561 b, 33d (3Sd); 571 b to 641 b, 3id (3Jd); 651 b to 721 b. 3 3-8 d (3Jd); ewes, 481 b and under, 23d (27-8 d 491 b to 561 b. 23-8 d (23-8 d 571 b to 641 b, 2ld (25d); 651 b to 721 b, 2 1-Sd (2id).

New Zealand lambs. "New Zealand and Australian frozen beef quotations second quality. Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated March 2:—Compared with last week's quotations, Down lamb, 28-361 b, l-8d a lb lower; 36-421 b, id a lb lower; second quality lamb, l-8d a lb lower; wethers, 64-721 b, l-8d a lb lower; ewes, under 481 b and 64-721 b, l-8d a lb lower; others unchanged. The market on the spot is weaker all round. Henry S. Fitter and Sons, Ltd., London, cable under date March 2 as follows:—Lambs: The demand, for this time of the year, is good. Wethers: The demand is moderate; the market for heavy weights is weaker. Ewes: Weaker values ruling, owing to a lack of demand. Chilled beef: Trade is slow. Pork: The market is firm. Trade generally is slow.
