Palea’s scheme for the Centennial Memorial, a children’s seaside park, paddling pool and swimming bath, was unanimously approved by the South Taranaki Zone Committee at Hawera on Wednesday. The plan of the proposed memorial was drawn by Mr. I. Harkness and was the object of much favourable comment. It was reported that the sum of £2034 was available for subsidy purposes on a one to three basis for local bodies in South Taranaki. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a Patea branch of the Alpine Club was held on Thursday, Mr. J. Peacock presiding. Messrs. R. Syme, F. J. Bourke, H. Snowden and D. C. Ryan from Hawera were also present. Mr. R. Syme, the well-known Alpine enthusiast, said how pleased they were that a mountaineering body was being formed in Patea. and they could be assured that every assistance would be given them in their efforts. Mr. Ryan and Mr. Bourke outlined ideas of socials, outings, etc., and gave some idea of the cost. Every new organisaii; .i is faced with expense, but they were not excessive. The Egmont Alpine Club had assets totalling £3OO and contemplated expending on a new hut at Dawson Fails, on a library and books of instruction on ski-ing. It was decided to form a branch of the Egmont Alpine Club in Patea, with the following committee: Misses Joan Bourke, Joan Clarke, Betty Bourke, and Messrs. J. Peacock, D. Rowan, E. Sicely, R. S. Members of the Knox Presbyterian Church, Patea, gathered in their hall on Thursday evening to welcome Rev. E. Francis Farr and Mrs. Farr, the new minister, who was recently married. A musical programme was first enjoyed, items being contributed by Misses McDonald and Watt (piano duet), and vocal solos by Mesuames F. Lund, T. Cardiff. McDonald, Misses M. Naismith, Cowie and i Tcssrs. L. Huston and F. Naismith. Mr. J. A. Haswell, who was chairman, called on Mr. H. A. Sutherland to speak on behalf of the Session and as the Taranaki Presbytery representative. He extended a welcome to Rev. and Mrs. Farr and wished them a very happy stay in Patea. Mrs. Farr was the fourth bride he had had the pleasure of welcoming as mistress of the Manse. He then presented them with a beaten brass firescreen, fireside curb and fire irons, with good wishes from the church members. Other speakers to extend a welcome were Mr. F. Naismith, on behalf of the managers; Mr. Edgar Sutherland, on behalf of Bible classes; Mrs. F. Lund, Ladies’ Guild; Mrs. H. A. Sutherland, P.W.M.U.: and Mr. E. F. Hemingway, Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of Patea and the Anglican community. Replying, Rev. Farr said he was overcome by the welcome given to his wife and self and thanked them sincerely. He wished them to understand that at all times they were welcome at the Manse, as he wished it to be an open” house. He returned thanks for the handsome gifts.
