Cardinal Eugene Pacelli has been elected Pope in succession to the late Pope Pius XI. His title will be Pope Pius XII. Cardinal I’acel.i was elected on the third ballot, on his 63rd. birthday. Then the words “Habemus Pontificem” (“We have a Pope”) from the Vatican wireless station rose over the tremendous cheering in St. Peter’s Square. The station broadcast an appeal to the people of Rome to gather in the Square and hear the proclamation. The announcer was obviously most excited. Troops were immediately drafted to the Square, to which thousands of people flocked. < ardinal Pacelli appeared on the balcony at 6.15 p.m. as the trumpets rang out the Papal March. He was robed in white Papal vestments and was greeted with the wildest excitement. Cheerin.' and the singing of the hymn “Christ the King Reignetb” were interspersed with shouts of “Long Live the Pope!” • ardinal Pacelli was finally able to give the Benediction “Urvi et Orbi.”
