INTERESTING RACING

RANGITIKEI FOR LOCAL FOLLOWERS FRANKLIN. NAPIER PARK, AND BANKS PENINSULA There will be much more than usual to hold the interest of racing enthusiasts to-day. Not only will Wanganui sportsmen have the Rangitikei Racing Club's meeting to attract their patronage, but there will be racing at Banks Peninsula, I* ranklin, and Napier Park, while at Wellington there will be the concluding day of the trotting meeting. At Melbourne the Flemington meeting will open with the Newmarket Handicap, Sites’ Produce Stakes, and the King s Cup as the principal items. The only official scratchings at the Rangitikei meeting at Bulls to-day are Little Dorrit and Laughing Song, both of whom were accepted for in the Trial Plate. Dungarvan will not be at the meeting, while Rhodesian and Oratory are doubtful starters. Bridegroom, who figures among the acceptors for the maiden event at Bulls to-day, is a seven-year-old black gelding by Mimetic from the California mare Bridal Veil, and he is owned in Gisborne by Mr. F. A. Bruce. Peerless is to go on to New Plymouth from Bulls on Sunday, and she will be accompanied by the two-year-old Pearl of Asia, Riding engagements for the Napier Park meeting include: H. J. Callahan. Big Dook, Gay Son, Gayest Son. Defray, Greenore, and Parry or Morning Flight; W. J. Mudford: Granvale (Cup). Felicitation, Red Witch; J. Forsyth: Tiger Gain; J. Campbell. Ivar, Kathbella. Kobi. Halley. According to a cable to Australian papers, the favourite for the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase a week ago was Royal Daniell, who was second in the race last year. The next in demand was Kilstar anu Rockquilla, and others sought were Workman, Terne Willo, Airgead Sics, Blueshirt, and Royal Mail. The race will be run on March 24. Munich, the or.ij two-year-old m the maiden field at Bulls to-day, will don the same colours as Brazen KingA chestnut colt by Gascony from the Birkdale mare Peg o' My Heart < a half-sister to the dam ot Kick O.t and Bennanee), lie was secure., cheaply after being passed in at IA.I year's sales.

Beaupartir's being only 21b. below Cheval de Vole’e in the weights for the Taranaki Cup next week affords food for much thought. Pirate King returned to form al the Te Aroha fixture when, after winning handsomely the first day over six furlongs, he beat all but Galilee over seven furlongs on the latter day of the fixture. Pirate King showed himself to be a useful performer a couple of seasons ago anu now that he has come right again more should be heard of him in the months ahead. Siegmund is to have his next outing in the Carterton Cup next Saturday week. He will then race at Trentham, where the Autumn Handicap, run over a mile and three furlongs on the second day, will be his principal mission. Laughing Song, engaged in the maiden event at Bulls to-day, is a three-year-old half-sister by Laughing Prince 'to Mercian Prince and Sybilsong. She carries the same colours as Lady Stella, those of Mrs. L. G. Connop, of Hastings. The Trentham horseman S. Wilson is now well on the road to recovery from injuries received in a race fall at Otaki before the holidays. He has ben advised to wait another couple of months before resuming his profession. Moorsotis, winner of the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton and the Hopeful Handicap at Dunedin, may have his next race in the North Island Challenge Stakes, run at weight-for-age over seven furlongs at Trentham this month. His race on the first day will be among the two-year-olds in the Pacific Handicap. It looks only a question of this colt’s remaining sound to win many good races, as he is improving all the time with experience. Play On, whose form in the spring was very good when he won the principal hanaicaps at Levin and Otaki, appears to prefer a turning course. Haughty Winner has freshened up since he was beaten into third in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton, and he will be in great shape for the Kinloch Handicap at Motukarara, after which a trip to Trentham will probably follow. Alby and Bright Prospect were offered for sale at Hokitika iast Monday but neither attracted any bid-' ding.
