SENSATIONAL WIN
FIRST PACE IN YACHTING CHAMPIONSHIP MANU BEATS JEANETTE [ Per Prese Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 15. The first race for the_ world's 18footer sailing championship was held on the Waitemata Harbour this afternoon and resulted in a sensational win for the M class boat Manu (Richmond Cruising Club), which defeated the V class boat Jeanette (Ponsonby Cruising Club) by the narrow margin of seven seconds. Jeanette led in both rounds the course and was about to cross the finishing line when Manu, handled very smartly by the skipper, G. Chamberlin, turned round on the starboard and, passing Jeanette gained the verdict. Vaalele (Richmond Cruising Club) was third. Taree (the Australian boat and present holder of the world's title) was fourth and Manene (Herne Bay Yacht Club) fifth. Three Sydney yachts, Taree, St. George and Malvina, and twenty of Auckland’s smartest M and V 18footers took part in the race. St. George, which was leading Jeanette by 15 seconds, capsised at the first mark in sailing round it. The course was a triangular one of about nine miles.
