EARLY RECOGNITION?

FRANCO’S GOVERNMENT QUESTION IN COMMONS MR. CHAMBERLAIN’S REPLY [ British Official Wireless. ] Received Feb. 15, 5.5 p.m. RUGBY, Feb. 14. The question of recognition of General Franco’s Government was again raised in the House of Commons. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. C. R. Attlee, asked Mr. Chamberlain by private notice “whether, in view of the important issues involved, any decision, conditional or otherwise, to recognise the Spanish insurgent authorities as the de facto or de jure Government of Spain will be communicated to the House before any action is taken thereon, with a view to an early debate.” Mr. Chafnbenain replied: “The Government will naturally communicate to the House at the earliest possible moment any decision at which it may arrive. 1 cannot give an assurance that it will be possible for the Government to delay taking any action which may seem to it proper, but it is always within the power of the House to express its opinion on the Government’s policy, and should the Government reach any new decision I shall nautrally be ready to afford facilities for a debate.”

The National Council of Labour, at a meeting held in the House of Commons, expressed grave dissatisfaction with Mr. Chamberlain’s answer, and restated the council’s opposition to recognition of General Franco's Government. The meeting was adjourned until February 15, in anticipation of the, Government’s decision being then known. NO DECISION FRENCH CABINET NEGOTIATOR TO VISIT SPAIN. Senator Leon Barard is going to Spain to continue his mission. The retreat was executed in splendid order. The insurgents alleged that the republicans, in evacuating Llers, blew up the magazine, causing the death of nearly all the villagers. Insurgent planes caused only minor damage in a raid on the naval base at Cartagena, but 100 were killed 200 injured in a raid on Jatiba, near Valencia.

The correspondent of the British United Press in Paris says that ten wounded loyalists are dying daily at French refugee hospitals owing to the rigours of theii retreat. A message from Bourg-Madame states that the last divisions of the Catalonian army have reached Frafice after blowing up ammunition and pushing lorries over the mountain sides in order tn deprive the rebels of them. SPANISH PRESIDENT REPORTED RESIGNATION. Received Feb. 15, 5.5 p.m. PARIS, Feb. 14. The newspaper Midi declares that Senor Azana has resigned the Presidency of Spain.
