NAVAL FORCES INADEQUATE
EARL BEATTY'S WARNING ADDRESS IN AUSTRALIA. Received Feb. 15, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 15. Earl Beatty, in a speech before the Navy League, said the Australiar naval forces were at present clearly inadequate to perform the heavj duties that would be put on them ii the event of war. The fortifications at Darwin anc Port Moresby were good as far ai they went, but he strongly urged the establishment of a chain of lortifiec naval bases from Singapore to Fiji He also urged the strengthening oi the Australian Navy and ihe mercantile marine, “It is a lamentable position that Australian possesses only three cruisers in commission and New Zealanc only one,” he said.
