FINANCIAL SUCCESS PROFIT ON YEAR’S WORKING COMMITTEE’S LAST MEETING The monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the Wanganui A. and P. Association was held yesterday the president, Mr. W. Craig, presiding over a good attendance. An offer to provide a trophy for wood chopping contests was held over until the next meeting of the Executive Committee. The cabled report of the placings at Smithfield of the exhibits in the last chilled beef championship was read and it was decided to ask the chief stewards of the cattle section to consult with the secretary to finalise the awards when the official report comes to hand. According to the cable the placings at Smithfield were as follow: First pen, No. 211, T. A. Duncan; second pen, No. 214, Ken Duncan; third pen, No. 212, T. A. Duncan; very highly commended, Pen No. 216, Herrick Bros. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board advised that the Meat Board’s Silver Challenge Shield for the North Island had been won by Wairarapa district, while Feilding district was placed second, Waikato third, and Manawatu fourth. They also advised that the entry of Mr. J. Wilson, of Turakina, had been highly commended. It was decided to write congratulating Mr. Wilson on his success. It was reported that the president (Mr. W. Craig), the vice-president (Mr. C. C. Baldwin;, and the secretary (Mr. A. R. Donaldson) had attended the conference of delegates at Feilding on February 1, when dates were finalised for next spring shows. Wanganui retains its usual dates of Wednesday and Thursday, following the Palmerston North Show, and Hawera has the Friday and Saturday following the Palmerston North Show —in the eventuality that people’s day must be held on a Saturday—was recorded. The report was received and approved. The treasurer reported that the credit balance in the bank was £420 14s. Accounts totalling £B7 17s 8d were passed for payment.

The auditor, Mr. W. M. Falconer, reported that he had completed the audit of the association's affairs for the year ended December 31, 1938, and in doing so added, “May I take this opportunity of expressing my appreciation of the methodical manner in which the affairs have been conducted

by your secretary—chapter and verse was available for everything and it was a pleasure to do the audit.” The report was “received” and the secretary was congratulated on his work. Salient, points from the balancesheet show that the excess income over expenditure for the year was £231 12s 2d, while the cash assets have grown from 1>56 7s 4d to £616 11s lid after allowing £5O for doubtful debts. The assets are shown at £5163, this amount being the valuation by an architect employed to assess the value of the buildings and plant for insurance purposes. During the year abnormally heavy expenditure was incurred in repairing and renovating the buildings and plant, £454 17s 5d being spent for this purpose. The liabilities are nil.

The secretary was authorised to send a copy of the balance-sheet and the statement of income and expenditure for the year to all financial members with the notice for the annual meeting, which is to be held on Wednesday, March 8, at 3p .m. Thep resident reminded those present that this was the last meeting of the Executive Committee before the annual meeting and that he would like to thank them one and all for the able way in which they had carried out their duties. To the secretary, he macle special reference, giving him a large measure of praise for his excellent work during the year. He also paid a tribute to the splendid services of the treasurer, Mr. C. M. Strouts, who, despite the worry and anxiety which had befallen him owing to the severe accident, to his daughter who, they would all be pleased to hear, was making rapid progress towards recovery, had piloted the finances of the association to their present satisfactory position. The president’s remarks were endorsed by acclamation. It was announced that all the present executive would again submit themselves for re-election at the annual meeting.
