DEFEATS AVENGED

AUSTRALIAN SWIMMER BIDDULPH BEATS NAKAMA THRILLING FINISH WITH HAWAIIAN AT MANLY Earlier defeats inflicted on him by the Hawaiian-Japanese swimmer, Kyoshi Nakama, were avenged by Robin Biddulph when the pair met recently in the 220 yards event. Nakama had proved too good lor the Australian in both the quarter and half mile championships of New South Wales.

In the short event the swimmers were affected by an awkward roll, but Biddulph returned the time of 2.16 3-5, —1 3-5 s slower than Jack MedicaL Australian record —in winning by one and a half yards. Biddulph has done better time—--2.15 4-s—the best by an Australian. In the Olympic pool at North Sydney, under better conditions, both brilliant swimmers would have accomplished something outstanding. Again the hand of me crack coach, Harry Hay, played a big part in the local boy’s triumph. He planned that Biddulph would not make his really determined dash until turning for the last "lap of 55 yards. Ryan toucheu first alter completing one lap, but Nakama had deposed him on the way to 110 yards. Biddulph, swimming to the set idea, was second as they finally turned for home. Then the real battle started. Biddulph gradually overhauled his noted rival, and had the race won about 20 yards from the finish. I'o win over the crack international swimmer in Manly in front of his cluo mates was a great climax to his excellent performances at North Sydney on the previous Saturday and Wednesday. Noel Ryan was 3 l-5s behind Biddulph. He has swum consistentlythroughout the carnivals, but is not now the Ryan who shot to Lie fiont a few years ago. In the half-mile title at North Sydney, Nakama and LidGuiph oom broke the Australian record of 10.22 established by Andrew Charlton in I the Domain Baths seven year ago. I The visitor did 10.12 4-5, and the AusI tralian 10.16 2-5. Ryan was third.
