MEETING AT MANGAWEKA

FORMATION OF YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB (Own Correspondent). MANGAWEKA, Feb. 3. An enthusiastic and very well attended meeting of the young farmers of the district and several members of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, interested in the formation of a Young Farmers’ Club in Mangaweka, was held on Friday evening last. Mr. S. Freeman, Dominion organising secretary, and Mr. A. R. Dingwall, of the Department. of Agriculture, were present and brought with them a “talkie” outfit and several films dealing with agricultural matters generally. After the films had been shown, both Mr. Dingwall and Mr. Freeman outlined the advantages to be gained by forming a branch of the Young Farmers’ Club here, and spoke of the progress of the movement, not only in New Zealand, but in other countries throughout the world. At present there are no Jess than 150 clubs in the Dominion, with upward of 4000 members. The movement offers to the youth of New Zealand to-day, a greater opportunity to gain advice and experience in farming and agriculture generally, than has ever been possible before. Field days, including visits to the best farms in the district, are regularly arranged, also stock demonstrations, debates and lectures, and camps and tours at the cheapest possible rates. The annual subscription is fixed al 3s 6d, and includes a copy of the Journal of Agriculture (now much

improved) posted monthly to each member. It was unanimously agreed to form a club in Mangaweka and to call another meeting in the Max Theatre supper room on Tuesday, February 7, to elect officers and make a start on drawing up a programme for the season. In the meantime a provisional committee, comprising Messrs. P. Green, J. Reilly and W. A. Hamilton, has been drawn up, and any person interested in the club is asked to get in touch with either of these immediately. (Further Country on Page 11).
