EVENING AT PATEA

TO HONOUR MISS G. HALL (Own Correspondent) PATEA, Feb. 2. Residents of Kakaramea honoured Miss Gertie Hail, on Monday evening, in the Kakaramea Hall, visitors attending from Okaiawa, Manutahi, Wavertey, Hurleyvilie, Patea, and Alton. Miss Gertie Hall, whose frock was in celadin green waterwaved French ■ velvet, with gaily striped sash, aid Mrs. H. J. Hall, in navy blue georgette, were both presented with posies by Mesd.ames Morris and Watt. Miss Anne Hall was wearing Florentine blue floral cloque, with a black velvet coatee, and Mrs. L. G. Morris, the hostess for the evening, was in a gown of navy blue craque'lla, patterned in scarlet. Dancing to music played by Mrs. Tidswell was enjoyed and items were intervened by Mrs. G. W. Corbett (song), Miss Shirley Craig (pianoforte solo), Mr. W. Watt, (recitation), Miss Pauline Craig (violin solo). Messrs. Kevin Bourke and C. Lord acted as M.C’s. Mr. R. Watt, on behalf of the residents, wished Miss Hall every happiness in the future, and said how good she had been in helping at all the local functions. Rev. W. H. Walton wished the young couple the very best of luck and happiness. Mrs. L. G. Morris, president of the Kakaramea W.1., thanked Miss Hall for the valuable help she had generously given them, and for interesting demonstrations, and items also. On behalf of the institute she wished her future happiness and presented her with a pyrex dish. Mr. R. J. Watt then asked Miss Hall on accept the many gifts her friends had brought. Mr. R. Sargeant, replying, thanked the speakers for the good wishes and those present, for the gifts. PATEA PERSONALS Mrs. N. Dempster, Urenui, is the guest of Mrs. E. A. Rodgers. Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Crawford, Stratford, were in Patea for the weekend. Mrs. E. Campbell and Mr. Don Campbell have returned from Auckland. Miss Joyce Mawhinney, Auckland, has been visiting her brother, Mr. G. Mawhiney. Mrs. R. Ryan, Misses K. Petersen, and V. Jones, were Hawcra visitors during the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Francis and family have returned from North Auckland. Mr. Law, who has been relieving manager at the Bank of New South Wales, has left for Napier. Miss Barbara Wilson has returned after the school vacation. Willis i 36 1-5, ssec., 41 1-5. Firemen Millan and M. Carey 41 I 4-5. nil, 41 4-5. N.Z. DEFENCE LEAGUE MEETING AT PATEA Mr. E. F. Hemingway presided at a meeting of the N.Z. Defence League last week.

The Patea Freezing Co. advised 1 that they would be pleased to assist in the defence movement, by granting leave to employees to attend camp. It had been decided that Hawera be the headquarters of the league for Taranaki, reported the secretary. Messrs. J. T. Peacock and L. Clarke were appointed delegates to the provincial council of the league. Dr. Simmons and the secretary are i to wait on the Women’s Institute at ' their next meeting, with a view to I them assisting in the objects of the I league. A remit to be forwarded to the an- | nual meeting was that lady members' subscriptions be .H. The Farmers’ Union, including the women's branch and the Young Farmers’ Clubs are to also be approached for assistance. The secretary reported that there were 67 financial members, and the credit balance was £7 0s Id. It was decided to hold a Defence League dance at the beginning of the winter. The next meeting of members will be held on February 18, for which the committee were recommended to obtain a speaker. Messrs. Clarke, Nicholson and the secretary wore appointed a committee with power to add, to arrange

visits to the territorial parades. A recommendation is to be made to headquarters that bugle calls be recorded and broadcasted from the various stations at certain hours of : the day.
