Playing the first match of his professional career, Donald Budge beat Elsworth Vines, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, at Madison Square Garden, before a record crowd of 17,000. Vines showed himself defective in elementaries of the game, his forehand being weak and his backhand lamentable. He led 4-3 in the second set, but Budge again took command and overwhelmed him with the force and accuracy of his shots from both sides and overhead.
