LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI TOURNEY HARD-FOUGHT GAMES FINALS TO BE PLAYED TO-DAY The Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s New Year tournament was continued on the Wanganui Club’s courts yesterday when the quarterfinals and a number of semi-finals in some of the competitions were played. A feature of the day’s play was the number of closely-fought games, many of the championship games going to three sets. The weather was fine and sunny with only a light breeze across the courts, which played well. The semi-finals and finals of the championship events will be played today, the finals being staged during the afternoon. The only competitions to be finished yesterday were the ladies’ handicap singles, the men’s B grade championship and the ladies’ B grade championship. The finalists in the men’s championship singles are W. T. Pountney (Auckland) and T. F. Lyons (Wellington). The former accounted for E. Dickie (Waverley), 6-8, 8-6, 6-2, and Lyons eliminated A. Dickie (Waverley), 8-10, 8-6, 6-3. Both games provided much good tennis, but the Dickies were unable to maintain their form in the third sets. Their opponents were well up to form and fully deserved their victories. In the men's doubles the final will be fought between A. and E. Dickie and Lyons and J. J. McCarthy, the latter a Taranaki player. The Dickie brothers won the doubles title at the recent Hawera tournament and will be hard to stop in to-day's games. In the semi-finals, the Dickies had an easy victory over N. Hay-Campbell and M. L. Lampe, the Wanganui pair, who they ousted in the semi-finals at Hawera. Hay-Campbell and Lampe failed to come up to expectations yesterday and made many mistakes. In the other semi-final. McCarthy and Lyons had a tough fight against N. B. Barkman and D. W. Earle. The Wanganui pair lost the first set 0-6, but fought back strongly in the second set with well-placed lobs to drive their hard-smashing opponents to make many mistakes and took the honours 8-6. McCarthy and Lyons took the lead n the final set, but lhe games were equalised at 5-all. However, they had the edge on their opponents and took ■ the next two sets to win 7-5. Miss M. Purcell (Wanganui) and Miss J. Ramsay (Auckland) fought a long duel in the semi-finals of the ladies’ singles, victory going to the Auckland player, 11-9, 2-6, 6-4. Miss Ramsay played her usual steady game and her accurately-placed shots slowly wore her partner down. Miss Purcell put up a game fight and Miss Ramsay was forced to play with caution. In the other semi-final, Miss K. O’Sullivan (Hawera), who sprang a surprise by accounting for Miss J. Hansen, last year's title-winner, had a comparatively easy victory over Miss M. Dickie, 6-3, 6-3. Misses J. Hansen and J. Ramsay will meet Misses O'Sullivan and Dickie in the final of the ladies’ doubles. The combined doubles will be advanced to lhe semi-finals this morning. The men's B grade championship was won by J. H. Connett, who accounted for J. Kidd, and the ladies’ B grade championship was annexed by Miss Goldfinch. The following games are to be played this morning: 9 a.m.—Combined championship doubles between Miss M. Purcell and Lyons and Miss Clarke and HayCampbell. 10 a.m.—Combined championship doubles between Miss B. Griffiths and McCarthy and the winner of the first match. The final of the men’s singles between Pountney and Lyons will be played at 1 p.m. and the final of the ladies’ singles between Miss J. Ramsay and Miss K. O'Sullivan will be played at the same time.
