PICKPOCKETS ACTIVE
RACEGOERS LOSE MONEY STRATFORD OPERATION NEW PLYMOUTH. Jan. 3. Pickpockets were active on the Strat- • ford racecourse yesterday, small sums ! being stolen as well as two wallets 1 containing pound notes. “I should advise racegoers and holii clay-makers visiting crowded resorts i to be on the watch,” said a police offij cer yesterday. At least one man at Stratford yesterday considers himself particularly unfortunate. He is Mr J. Norris, Central Otago, who had £l2 s f olen. The theft is understood to have occurred while Mr Norris \<as standing in a closely-packed crowd at one of the totalisator windows. It is also understood that a substantial sum was | lost by another man. The crowd at the racecourse yester- , day was one of the biggest ever seen and was estimated at more than 10,- ! 000. Both in front of the totalisator j before races and at the back after each event patrons were densely I packed.
