THE AUSTRALIAN MARKETS When the Australian stock exchanges closed for the Christmas and New Year vacation the tone of the market was very satisfactory in comparison with the position of a year ago, when all the disturbing factors of the intervening period are taken into consideration, states the Argus, Melbourne. Taking the monthly average of market prices, as reflected in the "Argus” index figures for December, 1937, and December, 1938, it is revealed that the market has been remarkably steady. Government securities show a fall of 4.7 per cent, in prices and the average decline in the 25 leading industrials used for the index is only 2.4 per cent. Banking stocks are down 7.4 per cent., while preference shares are 0.6 per cent, higher than they were a year ago. The largest decline is in silver-lead shares, which are 13.6 per cent, lower on the year.
