BIG EXPENDITURE MILLION FOR CITY WORKS [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Jan. 3. A former Lord Mayor of Sydney, Alderman E. S. Marks, who arrived by the Narkunda, said the highlight of civic affairs in Sydney was that the city was about to borrow £1,000,000, to be spent at the rate of £lOO,OOO yearly on improvement works. Another outstanding feature of Sydney activities was the children’s playground movement, on which £20,000 yearly was being spent. About 5000 children were being taught arts and crafts and also sports and games in the playgrounds, each of which was controlled by two men and two women experts. “Experts have said that Sydney is in the forefront of the world in this work,” he added.
