HITHER AND THITHER
A Queer Hobby. A woman with the quaint hobby of keeping ants arrived at Plymouth in the Queen Mary recently from the United States of America. She was Mrs. Grey Wornum, wife of the architect who is decorating the new liner Queen Elizabeth, and she took her ants ashore with her in a glass frame with all kinds of chambers filled with the little insects. The ants were fed by Mrs. Wornum on honey and distilled water. Lonely Posts for Women Teachers. Two women in the Hebrides have the loneliest teaching posts in Britain. One is Miss Dolly Smith, who has recently taken up a post at Ardveg in Lewis, 18 miles across trackless moors from the nearest road and five miles by sea from the nearest village. Her pupils are a shepherd’s family. The other is Miss M. B. MacDonald, of Lochmaddy, who teaches five pupils on tne island of Heisker. This island is often cut off from the rest of the Hebrides for months by storms, and radio-telephone from Monarch lighthouse is the only means of communication.
