Meteorological Office, Wellington, Tuesday, Jan. 3, 3 p.m. General Situation.—A belt of high pressure extends from New South Wales to beyond the North Island and a shallow westerly depression crossed thfe southern portion of the South Island to-day while a more vigorous one is advancing on to Tasmania. Forecast.—Winds: Light and variable in the far north, elsewhere moderate to strong north-westerlies to westerlies; xinds decreasing somewhat to-morrow and changing temporarily to south-westerly in parts of western and southern districts, but freshening again later. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits, moderate on the west coast, slight on the east. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to moderate easterly winds in the northern portion with slight seas, otherwise moderate westerly winds, freshening in the southern portion with rising seas. Weather: Fair to fine in eastern districts, and fair to cloudy in those with a westerly aspect. Conditions becoming unsettled later in the south-western portion of the South Island. Temperatures mild to warm. Time of sunset to-day, 7.58 p.m. Time of sunrise to-morrow, 4.53 p.m.
