THE BIGOT WINS

Aidworth Stakes Success At Marton MUTIE’S SPRINT HONOURS SUMMER MEETING CONCLUDES Again favoured with ideal weather, the Marton Jockey Club concluded its summer meeting yesterday and registered a huge success. The attendance was not quite as large as on Monday, but the totalisator showed another increase, the amount handled on the day being 418,851, compared with £16,471 10s last year. The total for the meeting was £45,663, as against £06,259 for the 1938 meeting, an increase of 49404. Over 800 cars were parked in yie enclosure and in aajacent Streets. The track was in good order and fast. A feature of the meeting was tne success that attended occupants of the Awapuni stables of L. G. Morris, who turned out six winners, four ot them yesterday. Three of yesterday s winners carried Mr. T. A. Duncan s colours. The principal event, the Aldworlu Stakes, was won by The Bigot, owned by Mr. F. F. Newman, a member ol the Wanganui Jockey Club Committee, with Te Hai second and Gay Chou and Siegmund dead-heating for third place. .. . The open sprint went to Mittie, who just beat Lady Ina and Laughing Lass. Royal Choice won the Rangitikei Hack Cup narrowly from Dark Eagle. Presenting tropnies to Mr. J. Duggan, owner of the Ladies' Necklace winner, Otaki, and to Royal Choice s owner, the president of the Marton Jockey Club, Mr. H. J. McManaway, congratulated the winners and expressed thanks on behalf of the club lor their generous support. Both recipients briefly replied, Mr. Duncan paying a trioute to his trainer, L. u. Morris, and Tattersail, who was associated with the success. Taitoa fell three furlongs from home in the Ladies' Necklance, but ins rider, Mr. M. Power, was uninjured. The occurrence was accidental, Taitoa slipping when his rider attempted to straighten him up. About the same place in the Aidworth Stakes Old Surrey got on the heels of Corroboree ana fell, bringing down Lady Montana. Botn jocseys were badly shaken but did not suffer serious injuries. An inquiry was held into the incident but it was deemed to be an accidental fall, with no blame attachable to any of the riders. When the field for the Junction Plate was lining up, T. Poad, rider of Miss Leighon, had a foot crushed when his mount sidled into another. He dismounted in great pain and received treatment from the St. John Ambulance officers. As Poad could not resume riding the field was sent away without Miss Leighon, but as she was under the starter's orders, investments on her could not be returned, and her backers did not get a run for their money. Favourite Wins Amateurs’ Race. Otaki was little better than evenmoney favourite tor the Ladies’ Necklace and duly won. Going out of the straight Otaki and Master Hector led Taitoa, All Spirit, Mataroa and Gladium. Along the oack there was little change, tne leaders racing in pairs. Taitoa fell tnree furlongs from home. On the home turn Otaai still held command and ne ran home a winner by a length and a-h 11 from Gladium, who was two lengths in front of Master Hector. Mataroa was fourth and there was a gap of six lengths back to Black Man and All Spirit. » Ecstatic On Her Own. Ecstatic was backed down to an even shorter price than on Monday when she went out to contest the Junction Plate, and she won as easily as the betting suggested. A delay was caused before the start through the rider of Miss Leighon injuring a foot, with the result that tne field was despatched without the Leighon filly. Ecstatic jumped out ana established a commanding lead, being three lengths in front of Varimonu and Military Maid on the home turn. The favourite came away to win. oy five lengths, with Military Maid a neck in front of Varimond. Aurora’s Star was fourth, ahead ot Cheetah and Classform. Entheos at a Good Price. Only four lined up for the Tutaenui Hack Hurdles, bui the winner was relatively the outsider of the field, Entheos, who was bracketed with Princess Isabel. Ambition again set out to make the pace, being attended past the stands by Bing Boy, with a gap of four lengths back to the bracketed pair. Entneos ran up behind Ambition and Bing Boy who rose together at the hurdle uy the five furlongs. Bing Boy jumped to the front at tne penultimate hurdle but was challenged by Entheos in the run to the judge, ana Entheos won by halt a length. Princess Isabel was four lengths back, clear of Ambition, who pulled up very lame. Ruling Spi Runs Away. Ruling Spi, favourite for the Wairoma Hack Handicap, but at a good price, ran right away from her opponents at the finish. Jumping out smartly Ruling Spi led Thrasos, Travail, Donegal ana Golden Ridge into the back stretch, with Colfort at the tail of the field. The order of the leaders was little changed across the top, and Ruling Spi turned into the straight clear of Thrasos, Travail, Donegal, Golden Ridge, Peach Blossom and Viracious. The last-nam-de made a run on the outer over the last furlong but Ruling Spi was doing it nicely to win by five lengths, noses I separating Donegal, Thrasos and Viracious in that order. Golden Ridge was I fifth and Travail next to finish. The Bigot Wins Well. Amigo was. best backed in the Aidworth Stakes but was checked when • Old Surrey and Lady Montana fell three furlongs from home, The Bigot winning well from the little-fancica . Te Hai. | bk Gay Chou led The Bigot, Old Sur-

rey, Te Hai and Corroboree out of the straight, and into the back stretch Gay Chou was joined by Corroboree, with The Bigot, Te Hai and Siegmund next, followed by Amigo. Crossing the top Old Surrey fell and Lady Montana came down over him. Gay Chou turned into the straight ahead of The Bigot, Corroboree and Te Hai, buf in the run to the judge The Bigot came through at the distance and won by two and a-half lengths from Te Hai, w’ho finished fast. Gay Chou deadheated frr third with Siegmund, a length away, and then same Amigo, Corroboree and Rustem. Desperate Sprint Finish. Lady Ina, Mittie and Laughing Lass were heavily backed in the Telegraph Handicap, and in a desperate finish they filled the places, the verdict going to Mittie. Acceptable whipped round at bar-rier-rise, and after a furlong Laughing Lass joined Mittie in the lead, with Lady Ina and Sporting Gift next. Laughing Lass drew out to lead across the top by two lengths from Mittie and Lady Ina. The latter pair joined issue at the distance and Mittie got through on the rails to win by hail a head from Lady Ina, with Laughing Lass a neck away. Aureus and Sporting Gift were next, three lengths ahead of Russian Ballet. Royal Choice Narrowly. Royal Choice was backed down to odds on for the Rangitikei Hack Cup and won, but only by a narrow margin from Dark Eagle. Seyfried and Rarotonga led. Twenty Grand and Royal Choice out of the straight, but at the five furlongs Nereus ran to the front quickly aim led Rarotonga, Seyfried and Dark Eagle along tne back, Royal Choice dropping back to last. The favourite moved up again crossing the top, following Nereus and Dark Eagle, and he actually headed Nereus into the straight. Over the final stages Royai Choice had to withstand a determined challenge from Dark Eagle, winning by a long head. Nereus was a length away, anead of Rarotonga, with a gap of three lengths to Twenty Grand. Filetto Springs Surprise. Saki was backed as unbeatable in the concluding event but was beaten by the Marton-owned and trained Filetto at a good price. Filetto jumped out in front at barrier-rise and was never headed. She was followed early by Great Legion and Copy Cat. The favourite ran up behind Filetto and Great Legion crossing the top and set out to attempt to overhaul tne leader in the straight, but Filetto ran away to win by five lengths. Saki beat Great Legion by half a length for second place, with Brazil fourth, head of Copy Cat. Details of results: — LADIES' BRACELET. (Of Silt; 9 furlongs). 1— Otaki (Mr. J.
