LAWN TENNIS

WANGANUI TOURNEY INCREASE IN ENTRIES FIRST DAY’S RESULTS The Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s annual district championship tournament was opened yesterday on the Wanganui Club's courts with the entries showing a substantial increase over last year. A feature of this year’s tournament is the high standard of the competitors and it is hoped that this will be reflected in the standard of the games. Good progress was made with the elimination rounds of the championship and handicap events yesterday, the majority of the games being men’s singles championship, men’s doubles championship and the men’s and women's handicap singles events. The men’s handicap and championship singles sections have drawn large entries and good support has been accorded the combined handicap and championship events. More than a hundred games were played yesterday and more could have been played if some of the players from outside centres had arrived.

J. J. McCarthy (Taranaki) is defending his singles title and Miss J. Hansen (Auckland) will arrive to-day to defend the women’s singles championship. With a number of seasoned players in both sections it will be no mean matter for both players to hold their titles this year. The tournament manager is Mr. K. McFarlane and the secretary Mr. A. W. J. Peacock. Results of yesterday’s play were as follow: CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS Men’s Singles First Round.—J. J. McCarthy beat C. S. Wylds, 6-3, 6-1; J. Free beat K. O. Parnell, 6-4, 6-8, 6-4; F C.
