MARTON SUCCESS

Totalisator Shows Big Increase LADY MONTANA WINS CUP RAILWAY TO ORATORY The Marton Jockey Club enjoyed ideal weather conditions yesterday for the opening of the summer meeting, and the attendance exceeded even the most sanguine expectations. The supply of race-books was exhausted early, and over 1300 cars were parked in the enclosure, with more than 20C on the roads leading to the course. The totalisator handled £26,812, compared with £19,787 10s on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £7024 10s. The racing was run well to schedule in spite of the crowd. The track was in excellent order. The principal race, the Marton Cup, 'was won by the outsider Lady Montana, at just short of double figures, and Oratory proved her class by winning the open sprint, conceding 221 b. upwards to her opponents. Prior to the Marton Cup the judicial committee held an inquiry regarding the engagement of a riaer for Play On and The Bigot, and it was announced mat G. R. raitersall had a definite engagement to ride The Bigot, hence the claim of Play On’s connections for his services could not stand. Daughter of Aurora Borealis. Snigger was a good favourite for the Maiden Race but the winner turned up in Auroras Star, a filly by Vaals from Aurora Borealis, who leu all the way. Snigger showed out momentarily but Aurora’s Star went to the from inside a furlong and a little further on Snigger dropped right back. Aurora’s Star turned for home a couple of lengths ahead of Regicide, with Doctor Deioe and Travail xour lengths bacK and Red Chief and Girl Pat the only others in the picture. Aurora’s Star ran home a winner by two lengths and Travail caught Regicide right on the post to get second place by a nose. Doctor Defoe was a fair fourth and Red Chief and Girl Pat were next. Trophy to Golden Ridge. Bing Boy, Golden Ridge and Otaki were oacked in that order for the Ladies’ Bracelet and they filled the places, with the favourite third. Donegal, Taitoa, Otaki, All Spirit and Bing Boy led out of the straight, with Golden Ridge well back, but crossing the top Golden Ridge improved his position and turned for nome behind Otaki and Donegal, with Bing Boy next. Golden Ridge assumed the lead inside the distance and won cy two and a-half lengths from Otaki who was a length and a-half ahead ol Bing Boy. Mataroa was fourth, followed by Gladium and Donegal. Ambition All the Way. Porotiti, a good favourite for the Rata Hurdles, failed to get a place, Ambition leading all the way. Past the stanos the first time Ambition made the pace for Pound Sterling, Princess Isabel, Porotiti, Royai Record and Entheos, but along the back Entheos moved up to join Ambition at the five furlongs, with Royal Record next. Ambition went away again to lead by four lengths into the straight, with Entheos and Princess Isabel next. Over the final stages Ambition was always doing it nicely to win by six lengths from Entheos. who was three lengths ahead of Princess Isabel. Porotiti was a fair fourth ahead of Royal Record, with Pound Sterling beaten off. Easy for Ecstatic. Ecstatic was backed down to a short price for the Juvenile Handicap and duly won. When they had settled down Ecstatic went into the lead from Great Legion and Varimond, but Miss Leighon ran up quickly to second place and followed the favourite on the home turn, with Great Legion and Varimonu next. Ecstatic ran home an easy winner, five lengths in front of Vanmond, who beat Great Legion by three lengths for second place. Miss Leighon, Prinihia and The Tryst were next in order. Outsider Wins Cup. Taurangi disappointed those who installed her favourite for the Marton Cup and the winner turned up in Lady Montana at just short of double figures. Mittie, Lucullus Lad and The Bigot led out of the straight from Play On Old Surrey, Hunting Cat and Taurangi, with Lady Montana, Siegmund and Taillight at the rear. The Bigot made a forward move along the back, where Lady Montana had run up fast outside Lucullus Lad, and crossing the top Hunting Cat also came round the field. The Bigot, Lucullus Lad ana Hunting Cat led into the straight from Tiger Gain, Play On, Old Surrey and Lady Montana, but the last-named got through on the rails at the distance and came away to win by two lengths. Hunting Cat beat Taurangi by a neck for second place, and Tiger Gain was fourth, with The Bigot, Siegmund ana Old Surrey following. Oratory Gets There. Oratory 7 , backed down to odds on. pulled her backers through in the sprint but she only just got there. Russian Ballet dwelt at the barrier rise and Oratory’ led Te Hai and Lady Ina down towards the half-mile, where Lady Ina had run into second place and Russian Ballet had made up ground. On the home turn Oratory and Lady Ina were on terms, followed by Te Hai and Russian Ballet, with Aureus coming wide out. Lady Ina headed Oratory a furlong off the post but Tattersail punched the favourite home half a head in front. Te Hai was three lengths back, with' Aureus fourth and Russian Ballet fifth. Seyfried Scores Nicely. Ruling Spi, favourite for the New Year Hack Handicap, was beaten into third place by Seyfried and Viracious. Going out of the straight Ruling Spi, Rarotonga, Viracious, Dark Eagle

and Seyfried were the leaders, but the I pacemaker was then displaced and Rarotonga and Viracious led from Seyfried and Ruling Spi along the back. Viracious and Rarotonga were in the van on the home turn, with Seyfriend and Ruling Spi just behand them. Seyfried assumed command at the distance and Ruling Spi came on the rails, but Viracious stuck to his job, running Seyfried to half a neck. Ruling Spi was three-quarters of a length away, third, with Twenty Grand and Dark Eagle ahead of Rarotonga. Ruatiti's Winning Way. Sporting Gift, favourite for the concluding event, stood on the mark and it was left to the second favourite, Ruatiti, to bring backers through. Daisy Chain and Sporting Gift welt at' barrier-rise, and Saki was followed along the back by Ruatiti and Night Eruption. On the home turn Ruatiti ran up on the outside of Saki and came on to win by a length, with Night Eruption two lengths back, third. Copy Cat was only a head away and there was a gap of three lengths to Brazil, Daisy Chain and Sporting Gift. Details of results:— MAIDEN RACE. (Of £130; six furlongs). 4—Aurora's Star (Mr. J. J.
