KINROSS BY-ELECTION

DUCHESS OF ATHOLL DEFEATED. Received Dec. 23, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 22. The Kinross by-election resulted:— McNair Snadden (Conservative) 11,808, the Duchess of Atholl (Independent) 10,495. Sixty-seven per cent, of the electorate voted. Many were unable to poll, owing to the snowbound roads. Mr. Snadden said the result represented a vote of confidence in Mr. Chamberlain. The Duchess of Atholl said: I still think the Government’s foreign policy is leading us into grave danger. 1 think there will be a general election before long, at which I expect to stand I again. The total votes cast for the Government candidates in eight by-elec-tions since the Munich Pact is 196,686, compared with 176,796 for the Opposition. BY-ELECTION IN BRITAIN 13 GOVERNMENT LOSSES Received Dec. 23, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 22. Counting the latest by-election at Kinross, which was won by Mr. McNair Snaddan, there have been 58 by-elections since November, 1935, of which 10 have been lost by the Government to Labour and three to the I Independents.
