SHORTAGE OF SHEARERS
ACUTE IN WANGANUI DISTRICT EFFECT OF UNSEASONAL WEATHER Farmers in the Wanganui district cannot recall a season within recent years so bad for shearing as 1938 has been. The unseasonal weather has resulted in hundreds of sheds not finishing before Christmas as they have been able tod o in other years when weather conditions have been more favourable. The delay in some cases will mean deterioration of wool, in that bidi-bidi will begin to flower soon, and late shorn clips are likely to be seriously affected. A shortage of shearers has been created by the work being delayed Gangs which had sheds booked ahead have been unable to maintain theii intended timetables, with a result that farmers have sought other labour. In that quest they have not been toe successful, in that there is so much work offering on public works and in other similar spheres. Harvesting is also seriously delayed, and many hay crops arc in danger of being ruined.
