HOLIDAY MAILS

POST AND TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT TWO DELIVERIES TO-DAY ARRANGEMENTS FOR NEXT WEEK The Christmas season will have at least one bright spot for the post office staff after the hectic eleventhhour rush of the past few dhys, for after to-day’s two deliveries by postmen there will not be a house-to-house delivery until Wednesday of next week. The postmen will thus have three days—Sunday, Monday and Tuesday—during which they may banish all though of the mountains oi mail which have been moved during the pre-Christmas rush. Next Wednesday, however, will find an extra effort required, for in addition to the week-end accumulation of letters there will be a fairly heavy English mail to be delivered. The chief postmaster, Mr. A. Pellow, advises that to-night (Christmas Eve), in addition to the two house deliveries of mail by postmen, there will be a delivery of correspondence by postmen from the inquirywindow of the postmen’s branch, at the back of the parcels office, Ridgway Street, between 7 and 8 p.m. On Monday, which is being observed as Christmas Day, the post office will be closed in all branches, but the telegraph office will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m. .Boxing Day will be observed on Tuesday, when the post office will again be closed in all branches. There will be no delivery by postmen oi rural mail contractors, but mails closing at 5.30 a.m. will be despatched to the principal offices. All street post ing boxes will be cleared at 11 p.m. on Monday, December 26. The telegraph office will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 7 p.m. midnight on Tuesday. Similar arrangements have been made for the New Year holiday; Ou Saturday, December 31, there will be only one house-to-house delivery of mail, but a delivery of correspondence will be made by postmen from the inquiry office of the postmen’s branch, Ridgway Street, between 7 and 8 p.m The telegraph office will be open till 8 p.m. but as full a delivery of telegrams as possible will be made. New Year’s Day will be officially observed on Monday, January 2, when the post office will be closed in aL branches. There will be no delivery by postmen or rural mail contractors, but mails closing at 5.30 a.m. will bdespatched to the principal oilices. The telegraph office will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to midnight. Only one delivery will be made by postmen on Tuesday, January 3, but lhe usual hours will be observed by the telegraph office. During the Christmas and New Year holidays the automatic exchange staff will be in continuous attendance
