ON NEW PLYMOUTH TRACKS
SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS THURSDAY’S OPERATIONS The tracks at New Plymouth were slow after heavy rain on Thursday morning when the horses for Awapuni were given their final trials and those for the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting their semi-final try-outs. The galloping took place on the course proper with the flags out about 3C feet. The best efforts were those ol Ned Cuttie, Clessamor and Majority. The first to work was Namara, who was sent a mile, running the last seven furlongs in 1.37, He moved freely throughout. Wynardo was inclined to be sluggish when carrying out a working gallop over six furlongs. Colonel Mint was a neck in front of Mullamond at the conclusion of half a mile in 56sec. Triune, who looks well, worked twice round on the inside grass. Eastern Heir was. allotted a similar task. Clessamor displayed his usual speed to run half a mile in 53sec. It was the best gallop over the distance for the morning and Clessamor finished with plenty of dash. Noitaro appeared to have something in reserve when running three furlongs in 41sec. He looks in capital order for his engagements. Chief Lap was not extended to cover half a mile in 57sec. He appears to have done plenty of work. Swift Sand, who continues to improve, ran three furlongs nicely in 40sec. Booklaw did a serviceable working gallop over a mile, running the last half in 57sec. This horse is working well for a hurdler. Majority jumped off at the six furlongs post and moving in good styic reeled otf the first two furlongs in 25 2-ssec., and the half-mile in 524 sec. He was allowed to take things a littleeasy in the straight and required 1.21 1-5 for the full distance. It was a sound effort, showing that he will strip at his best at Awapuni. Ned Cuttie was responsible for an attractive effort when he beat Aussie Ra over seven furlongs by nearly a length. They ran the last six furlongs in 1.21 1-5, a good gallop on the heavy
track. Ned Cuttie revelled in the going and should the track be holding at Awapuni he may be prominent. Lexden and Te Morehu finished on terms at the conclusion of half a mile in 54 4-ssec. Guiding Light covered six furlongs at a little better than three-quartei pace. She is a fit mare and strode out in good style. Glenthawn, who has freshened up since racing at Woodville, was under a good pull when running five furlongs in 1.91. War Lap was sent once round, the last half-mile at three-quarter pace. Highball, who appeared to appreciate the going, ran the last half-mile of a round in 56sec. Sang Beau was not extended to cover live furlongs in 1.10. He was under a strong pull all the way. With the assistance of Glorietta over the first half-mile Tahurangi ran seven furlongs in 1.39. He hit out freely and handled the going in good style. Airam gave a first-class exhibition over four hurdles, jumping with plenty of dash. Hukumai, who figures in the Huatoki Maiden, should be Hokumai.
Tiger Gain won the Manawatu Cup in 1933 and again last year. He is not engaged to-day, Init Hunting Cat, the 1935 winner, is making another effort to-day. Nobleman won the Manawatu Cup. in two successive years, 1917 and 1918. Twelve months ago £45,348 was handled by the totalisator at Awapuni.
