CALL OF THE OPEN AIR
NEW ZEALANDERS ARE FORTUNATE IN THEIR SURROUNDINGS OUTDOOR SPORTS OF ’AH. KINDS Zealanders realise more forcibly than at any other time the glory of their surroundings. The call of the open air is insistent at Christmas time, and although tradition still clothes Father Christmas in a woollen robe of red and scatters snow-flakes about his reindeers, in this southern land people think more of bathing costumes, flannels and the garb for summer sport and recreation. This Christmas and New Year period is likely to be a record one fo. the number of people actively engaged in sport, and it is true that every person so engaged is worth a thousand sitting on the bank looking on. To all sportsmen, and they people New Zealand in thousands, this paper wishes a Merry Christmas and a Bright and Prosperous New Yearl We may yet live to see the day when Father Christmas will come to New Zealand in flannels, maybe in a bathing costume. When he does itVYill be in tribute to the glories of New Zealand—the Sportsman s Paradise.
