PAREWANUI

Owing to sickness there was only a fair attendance at the December meeting of the Parewanui Women’s Institute. In the absence of the president' and vice-president, Mrs. H. F. Russell was elected to the chair. Members stood in silence in respect for a valued member, the late Mrs. W. Klatt. She will be sadly missed, and the members of her family have the institute's heartfelt sympathy. On account of Feilding Show falling on the first Wednesday in Febru-

ary, our next meeting will be held on the last Wednesday in January. The competition will be a beaded jug cover, with mosquito net centre. The motto for the month was: “A closed mouth catches no flies.” Garden notes were supplied by Miss H. Russell, and a song by wee Beth Homes. Competition winners were: Decorated vase, Mrs. Anderson 1, Miss H. Russell 2, Mrs. H. F. Russell 3; best bloom, Mrs. Homes, senr.; amusement competition, Mrs. Last-Harris. Arrangements for the picnic will be made at next meeting. Hostesses for January will be Mesdames Homes, senr. and Last-Harris. A Christmas tree party for all the children of the district was given by the Parewanui W.I. and “Apa House” was crowded with children and parents. The school children, under the capable leadership of their master, Mr. G. Abraham, entertained with songs and recitations until the arrival of "Father Christmas,” who distributed gifts to each child. Judging by their happy faces, the children were thrilled with the party. Supper was served by W.I. members, after which cheers, led by Mr. Abraham, were given for “Father Qhristmas,” the president (Mrs. Bowen), and her band of willing workers.
