LEAVING AUSTRIA

SMUGGLED ART TREASURES. ! In spite of the vigilance of the Nazi I Administration in what was once Austria, collections of plate and pictures of the noble families are gradually making their way abroad, says the New York Times. Recently there was a sale of plate and porcelains at the Hotel Drouot, Paris, said to have belonged to the Hohenburgs. Now, the collection of the Princess Beatrix de Bourbon-Massimo from her Schloss Frohsdorf, is at Sotheby’s, London papers report. This is a famous collection of French Royal portraits, many of which once hung in the Tuileries, i Paris. It was inherited by the Prini cess from that Comte de Chambord, | who was acclaimed as Henri V by • Bourbons at the time of the July i Revolution in 1830. When the i Orleans Pretender, Louis Philippe, as- • cended the throne the Coifnt fled to I Austria and took the collection with ! him. One of the portraits, a half-length of Marie Antoinette by Vigee le Brun, aroused the anger of the Revolutionists when they sacked the Tuileries and still bears the mark where one of them drove his bayonet into the canvas. One little picture of the Duchesse de Berri, mother of the Comte de Chambord, painted on porcelain, was stolen from the Tuileries at the time of the Revolution, but afterwards" traced and acquired for the Comte by a number of his friends. Altogether there are 160 pictures in the collection, including many bought by the Comte during his exile. SHIPPING. HUDDART, PARKER, LTD. (Incorporated in Australia). T.S.M.V.
