NO REPLIES FROM LABOUR

COUNTRY QUOTA QUESTION NATIONALISTS WILL RETAIN IT ( Per Press Association.] PALMERSTON N.» Oct. 13. Requested by telegram by the Manawatu Provincial Executive of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union, together with a similar request to other Parliamentary candidates in the Palmerston, Manawatu and Otaki electorates, as to their attitude in respect of the country quota, the Labour Party candidates in these electorates did not elect to reply. Replies, however, were received from the National Party candidates. The telegram, which was dispatched on Tuesday last, read as follows: “What is your attitude towards the country quota? Will you vote to alter it if you are returned to power. Kindly advise urgently?” Replies were received from the three National candidates as follows: Mr. J. A. Nash (Palmerston North): “Country quota must remain as at present.” Hon. J. G. Cobbe (Manawatu): “I am, and always have been, in favour of maintenance of the country quota. At my meetings I am warning my hearers of the risk of its loss. Its abolition would mean domination of the country by the city trade unions.” Mr. G. A. Monk (Otaki): “Will definitely vote to retain country quota.” “The question was asked purely with the object of securing -the personal opinions of the candidates and not that of the party they represent,” said the secretary, Mr. L. I. Plimmer.
