The Farmers’ Union wrote

Department of Agriculture and telegraphed the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, asking if the clearing and control of noxious weeds on Crown and native lands was to be worked through the county councils. The union has received the following telegram from the Minister, in reply: “The letter referred to in your telegram had reference to the noxious weeds and ragwort eradication scheme worked through the county councils as in the past for work this season with prevision for work on unoccupied Crown lands, individualised native lands, other types of native lands, and on abandoned farms and the farms of indigent owners. “Allocations have already been made to all the county councils applying, including the Patea and Waitotara County Councils in the Wanganui district for work this season on the lands referred to under the scheme. Under the present scheme this eiadication is arranged through county councils in consultation with the local inspectors. The department is advising them by letter in reply to your letter to the Director-General of Agriculture.”
