Public Opinion

CHALLENGE TO MR. VEITCH Sir, —In the heat of the battle fot political honours one naturally allows for a certain amount ot exaggeration on the part ot candidates but when one persists in obvious terminologies inexactitudes it lowers the standard and the respect the average citizen has in democratic government.. By the foregoing I refer to one misstatement made by Mr. H. C. Veitch in the Opera House last evening, the statement was “that if a man did not like to accept work which was offered him he could receive assistance from the sustenance funds.” I would mention in passing that Mr. Veitch made the same statement before a meeting ot “young people" in the Savage Clut Hall on the 26th. day of May this year and was so reported in your journal the following day. I believe that the statement in question has nc foundation in fact and I issue a chailengt to Mr. Veitch to prove same. On the other hand, I will say (hat such a state of affairs did exist when the previous Government was in office 1931-1935. This statement is only one of many made by the candidate in question, which is not according to fact and if he wishes me to mention others he will find me only too willing to oblige.—l am, etc., L. STOKES, Fox Road, Wanganui. September 22, 1938.
