CHILDREN’S ENTERPRISE

THE GARDEN CIRCLE SHOW HIGH STANDARD OF HANDICRAFT COLOURFUL DISPLAY OF BLOOMS The annual display of the Wanganui Children’s Garden Circle, the only show in Australia or New Zealand conducted entirely by children, was officially opened at the Drill Hall yesyesterday afternoon by Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. The entries total more than 2000 and constitute a new record for the Circle, the show being the most successful yet staged in Wanganui. The entries are of a higher standard than hitherto and the task of the judges in many of the sections in separating the winning exhibits was no sinecure. The show was well attended yesterday’ by children and adults. In fact with so many exhibits, the Drill Hall is hardly large enough for the show, and the indications are that before long the Circle will have to find, if possible, a larger building. The displays of handwork provide a striking example of the valuable training given to the children of the district by the Circle and are of a standard of which any horticultural society in the Dominion would be proud.

The exhibits come from all parts of the Wanganui Education Board’s district and as far away as Taihape, Hunterville, Ohakune and Patea. The standard of the workmanship was praised by many of the visitors, many of whom found it difficult to realise that the whole of the work had been carried out entirely by children, whose ages range from under nine years to 16 years. A feature of the hall was the fine lay-out of the exhibits and the decorations in the colours of the circle, green and gold. Many hours’ work was necessary to make the most of the exhibits, and hours of voluntary effort were devoted to the lay-out and decorations. Perhaps the most outstanding exhibits are the miniature gardens, works of art in which the ingenuity and imagination of the juvenile minds have been given full scope. These gardens excited keen interest yesterday because of the high standard of workmanship apparent in them. Moss, twigs of trees, mirror lakes and streams, old boots, gloves, pieces of pumice and a hundred and one discarded domestic articles have been brought into effective use in creating miniature gardens realistic to a high degree with their cardboard houses, summer houses, animals and human beings.

Good entries have been received for the narcissi classes and the judging of the blooms was no easy task. The blooms are of a high standard and make a colourful display. The decorative work was highly commended by the judges, some of the examples being of an exceptional standard for young people. Features were the decorated saucers with and without ladies, presentation boxes of flowers and fruit, posies and novelty effects. The judges were: Decorative, Mesdames A. Cave, P. Fowler, J. A. Harris, A. H. E. Wall and J. Blakely, New Plymouth; miniature gardens, Mr. P. J. Cox; daffodils, Messrs. J. McCheyne Miller, A. Broadway and Mrs. F. Moorby; cut flowers, Messrs. S. Cole and W. Thiele; educational, Mr. S. I. Cox; hanging basket, Mr. H. H. Smith.

In introducing Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, the president, Mr. A. R. Donaldson, paid a tribute to the work of Mr. P. J. Cox (organiser) and Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Shanks.

In opening the show, Mr. Hemingway said he would like to congratulate the children on the excellence of the exhibits, which were really wonderful. They showed what could be done by little fingers under careful training and guidance. He would also like to express his wholehearted appreciation of the work of those who kept the flag of the circle flying. It would be impossible to speak too highly of those who were helping to train the little ones. The work was not only a national one but an Imperial one as well as it helped to mould the characters of the children who were the future citizens of the Empire. Continuing, Mr. Hemingway said that the work that the children were being taught to carry out would not only help to mould their characters but would stand them in good stead in after life. The more they could do to induce the children to think and act on right lines the better it would be for the country as a whole. As they all knew, there was a tendency at the present time to adopt the motto “Carpe diem” and enjoy themselves at any cost. Things spiritual were inclined to be neglected for material things. It was time they realised that no Empire could hope to flourish if its people gave themselves up to a life of pleasure and neglected the higher things. That was why the Wanganui Education Board granted the teachers permission to open the school day with a shqrt religious service. The Garden Circle, by bringing the children nearer to Nature, brought them nearer to God. A nation with children trained on these lines was a nation that would prosper, whereas a national of materialistic people who I ignored the Deity was one that would ! sooner or later fall into decay. His- ’ tory told them this over and over again.

Mr. Hemingway concluded by wishing the circle every success and by again thanking those who were helping it to flourish and turn the children into good citizens, the greatest asset any could wish to possess. The champion narcissi of the show was a "Kingdom” exhibited by Eileen Todman. Orchestral items were provided during yesterday's session. Last night a programme of music was provided by an orchestra of 20. The awards of the judges were as follow:NARCISSI Under Nine Years Trumpet.—Pat Vine 1, Joyce Handley 2, B. Hussey v.h.c.
