SUGGESTED EMPLOYMENTS CRIPPLED GIRLS AND BOYS In its annual report the New Zealand Crippled Children Society emphasises the need lor crippled girls and boys to learn a trade or profession and to become really skilled it they are to retain employment in later life. Consequently one of the main aims of the society is to see to the educational and vocational training of these children. The executive suggests occupations suitable to various types of disability, remarking, however, that there is always a danger in generalisation, lor the degrees of disability, temperament, and ability of individuals have to be taken into account. With that qualification, the following lists of generally suitable vocations are given:— Boys (heart cases). —Clerical work, drawing, engraving, jewellery, work,
lampshade making, poster work, tailoring (not cutting or pressing), ticket writing, watch repairing, wireless parts (assembling). Infantile Paralysis (leg cases).--Artificial limbs, attache cases, bootmaking and repairing, engineering (light), hairdressing, mechanical dentistry, metal work, optical work, picture frame moulding, ticket writing, sports goods, tailoring, woodwork (light). Infantile Paralysis (arm cases). — Clerical work, drawing and designing, French polishing, messenger work, printers’ reading, ticket writing. Tuberculosis of Bones or Joints..— Most forms of sedentary work under good conditions. Handsewn bootmaking, however, is not suitable for knee cases. Girls. Artificial flower making, lampshade making, clerical work, leatherwork (light), drawing and designing, packing (light). Occupations for girls with paralysed or amputated arms are difficult to find, but the following are possible; Clerical (book-keeping), drawing, frame embroidery, printers’ reading, messenger work, matching (for dressmakers).
