—_ SEALING-OFF MEASURES IN IN PROGRESS MEN FIGHT THE FLAMES I Per Press Association.] y GREYMOUTH, Aug. 11. Fire was discovered by an examining deputy this morning in the Liverpool State Colliery. Rewanui, in number one bank of the Morgan East section, due to spontaneous combustion of slack coal in a goaf, a worked out area. Sealing-off measures were taken to coniine the outbreak within the goaf, the 300 men affected being not allowed to enter any of the working places, but all were engaged in erecting stoppings. Fierce flames, however, destroyed the first line of wooden stoppings, further lines being erected by three shifts of men, sixteen in each gang It is hoped to seal off the combustion by to-morrow, and when the twenty wooden stoppings are completed the final sealing with concrete is expected to deprive the fire of air, thus ending it and enabling the area again 1c be worked. Superintendent Strongman expressed satisfaction at the results so far of the stoppings. Two previous outbreaks have occurred in the Liverpool mine during two and a-hal£ years. Coal production is unlikely lo resume before Tuesday or Wednesday.
