OBITUARY

MR. JAMES ROBINSON. The death has occurred of Mr. James Robinson, aged 82 years. H* was born in Wanganui and had lived here all his life. He conducted a carrying business for more than 50 years, and had seen Wanganui grow from a small settlement to its present status. He married Martha Nicholls, of Tasmania, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Wanganui, in 1878, the ceremony being performed by the late Very Rev. Dean C. H. Kirk. Mr. Robinson had been ill for the past year. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robinson. Mrs. Robinson predeceased her husband last February. Three daughter* Mesdames A. J. Barron (FeatherstorfY A. J. Stewart (Wanganui East), and A. E. Bland (New Plymouth), and four sons, James (Auckland), John (Wanganui), Joseph (Kai Iwi), and William (Wanganui) survive. MR. JAMES EDWARDS. Mr. James Clarke Edwards, aged 78 years, died at the Wanganui Hospital on Saturday. Mr. Edwards in his younger days settled in Central Otago, where he was engaged in gold mining, and later took up farming. On leaving the farm he went to live at Dunedin and then moved to Wellington and lately to Wanganui where he lived with one of his sons, Constable F. W. Edwards, until overtaken by illness, when he was obliged to* enter hospital. Three sons are members of the police force—lnspector G. B. Mr. John Frederick Miles, who passed away peacefully in his sleep some time during Saturday night at his residence, Queen Street, Marton, was well known to the community of Rangitikei. At the time of Jiis death he was 84 years of age. The late Mr. Miles was born in Canterbury in 1852. His parents came out to New Zealand in one of the first four ships. He was educated at Christ’s College and started his career commercially, but the call of the land was too great and he eventually look up farming pursuits, first at AKaroa and later at Oamaru. From Oamaru he returned to Christchurch where he took a very active part in the formation of the Shirley Golf Club. For hi* services as an officer of the club he was elected a life member when he left to take up residence in Marton. In Marton he was always interested in sport, and was a life member and a past vice-president of the Marton Golf Club. He was also a life member of the Marton Bowling Club. He waa a keen enthusiast of English cricket j For many years he was manager of ' the Marton Permanent Building Society and was later appointed a director of the company. He leaves two sons.
