GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES SURPRISE IN CORNWALL HANDICAP A.R.C. MEETING OPENS ( Per PiMs Association. 1 AUCKLAND, June 6. The Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting opened in fine weather at Ellerslie to-day before an attendance of 30,000. The track was holding. The totalisato? handled £79,474, compared with £50,341 for seven races last year, an increase of £29,133. An inquiry was opened into alleged interference with Floodtidc in the Cornwall Handicap, but was adjourned untd Thursday. Results are as follow: — JER vol S HANDICAP, FIRST DIVISION. Ridgway 3 Also.—4 Silk Sox, 8 Royal Limond, 5 Windsor Lad, 6 Irish Comet 9.1, 9 Killadar, 7 Kilberis, 10 Valpeen 9.3. Neck; head. Time, 4.42. Kilberis and Erination were first out and made the running for the first round from Silk Sox, Jolly Beggar and Huskie in close order. With half a mile to go, Erination and Huskie were almost on terms, ahead of Silk Sox and Jolly Beggar, the positions being unaltered into the straight. Huskie had a slight advantage at the last fence, but Erination finished best to win by a neck from Huskie with a head to Jolly Beggar. Silk Sox was a good fourth, followed by Irish Comet. Kilberis, Windsor Lad and Valpeen. CORNWALL HANDICAP (Of £600; li miles.) 14— CHEVAL DE VOLEE, 7.3 i H. Long 1 I—VALMINT, 7.6, H. N. Wiggins 7 KILONSA, 8.8, R. W. Head each way. Time, 2.7 2-5. Tybalt Jed out from Floodtide, Jack Tar, and Valmint. Along the back Jack Tar took charge from Enge and Day Wind, Valmint being sixth, followed by Kilonsa. At the half-mile Jack Tar and Tybalt showed the way to Enge, Valamito and Valmint, with Kilonsa heading the next bunch. Entering the straight Kilonsa made a fast run to the front but Valmint looked like a winner when Cheval de Volee came with a brilliant finish to win by a head, with, a similar distance to Kilonsa. Knight of Australia was fourth, followed by Tybalt, King Rey, Floodtide and Jack Tar. HUNT CLUB HURDLES. (Of £350; 2 miles). 1— Hirangi, 10.7. W. J. McDowell 1 9—Aramis, 9.0, D.
