A SPORTSWOMAN SUCCESS AT CLAUDELANDS Women owners and trainers have always played a big part in both trotting and racing, and it is always pleasing to chronicle a success for one of the female sex. The Autumn Handicap, the chief event on the Waikato Trotting Club's programme, credited to that popular Auckland sportswoman, Airs. C. E. McGregor, through the agency of Gay Sister, This was the latter’s second big success this season, as she had already won for her owner the Thames Trotting Cup. Mrs. McGregor delves in both racing and trotting, and in the former department has met with plenty of success through Palustre, a speed} daughter of Tea Tray and Marshland. Also being prepared for racing in her colours are a rising three-year-old by Hoariri from Valaria and a yearling colt by Bronze Eagle from Silent Miss. All are trained by E. Pope at Takanini. W. Clifton has been associated with the training of her trotters ever since she first entered the sport, and they have met with many fine victories. In the stable at present are Gold Dredge, Gay Sister, Bronze Queen, and Lady Potts. The only one of the quartet not yet a winner is Lady Potts, but (says an exchange) she has secured place money of over £7O, and has earned a 12 yards penalty. Her turn is not far away. Altogether this season Mrs. McGregor has collected £2250 in stakes, which is a happy augury for next season's racing and trotting. "THE LAST LAUGH” UNORTHODOX TRAINING That fine old adage, ‘'he who laughs last laughs best," was forcibly illustrated at the Waikato Trotting Club's meeting last week, when Kia Kaha showed the way.home to the opposition in the Eureka Handicap, and returned his supporters a substantial dividend, states a Wellington writer. For some weeks Mr. A. J. B. Norris, owner of Kia Kaha, had stood the banter of fellow-trainers for the unique training methods he had employed with the grey gelding. Kia Kaha has been one of the most disappointing pacers in the Auckland province in recent seasons, and he has been tried and found wanting on numerous occasions, his win last Saturday being his first success in fiftysix attempts. Mr. Norris secured him nearly two seasons ago, and, as was the case previously, he continued to fail. A few weeks ago he decided upon a radical change in the training tasks allotted to Kia Kaha. He trained him as a galloper! Serviceable pace work was his daily portion during the first fortnight, and later an occasional gallop. As if this was not enough foi him, Mr. Norris put him over a few fences on the Takanini track. This procedure was followed until race day when Kia Kaha had the hopples pul on him for the first time.
