IMPRESSIVE INCIDENT
CHIMING OF TOWN CLOCK SIGNIFICANCE REALISED RY FEW Ihe significance of an iiu idciv which occurred at the Methodist bi centenary commemoration service n I he Opera Hou.ae on Tuesday evonim: was lost on the larger part of the con gregation. A soloist, Mrs. C. I Berry, had sung an excerpt from Handel’s symphony, “I Know Thai M\ Redeemer Liveth.” and after an anthem by the choir there followed th? fellowship of silence. This portion of Ihe service was most impressive, but iifl.cr some 15 seconds the silence wa. broken by the nearby chimes of th lown clock striking the three-quart ci lour. The words to which arc set thi. ; famous Westminster chime are: “Oh Lord this hour Be Thou our Guide So by Thy power No foot may slide.” '1 he fact of the chime with these vords striking during ihe prayer was in odd. but. an appropriate one. but ew realised that the verse was from ‘I Knowf That My Redeemer Liveth. he same work by Handel that had ieen sung but a few minutes previ>usly.
