RAETIHI

VALEDICTORY MR. AND MRS. B. A. DRURY Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Drury, who have been very highly respected residents of Raetihi for many years, are leaving after this week for a trip to Australia, after which they will settle in Auckland. The following appreciation supplied by a contributor, aptly expresses the unique esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Drury were held in Raetihi: "We pass through this world but once; if we can be of service, use us, for we shall not pass this way again.” Words such as these were uttered by a well known traveller, passing through life’s way; we may apply these words, deep as they are in meaning, to two of our highly respected citizens, who are shortly leaving Raetihi to make their home elsewhere —Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Drury. They came here in 1920 to take up business, and with their partner, established the well known drapery and outfitting establishment of Urv/in and Drury, Ltd. Through his instigation the Druids’ Lodge was formed here in 1922, he being its first ArchDruid. He brought to its members fraternity and benevolence, which has enabled it to become a strong branch to-day with its imposing hall. He instituted the Christmas tree for the br-nofif; n f *he children, which is looked forward to annually; he was one of the prime movers in the founding ot the Bowling Clue winch was formed in the same year and by his love gave mucn of his time and gifts of plants to make it, in spite of grub and frosts, to be one of the finest in the Dominion. He interested himself in golf and football by his trophies. He threw himself wholeheartedly into the Boy Scout movement in its beginning, providing them with a hall for three years for the instruction of the youth in Scout law to ’Be Prepared.’ But to the poor and distressed they were better known. Many a Christmas table was blessed by the kindly thoughts of these people. Their whole period has been spent in consideration of then fellow citizens, inspired by the feeling that it was better to give than to receive. Their kindly natures were on the side of the oppressed in times of difficulty for the sake of their wives and children. The seeds of kindness and consideration, they themselves have sown during their stay amongst us, they are reaping to-day by the many expressions of regret in their coming departure, by all shades of thought. Thus the citizens of Raetihi have become enriched by the lives of these people and we are sorry to lose them.
