DOUBT ABOUT PANDAVA

MELBOURNE CLP NOMINEE Although one of the “Smithden" partners, owners of the brilliant two-year-old Pandava, does not believe that the colt will develop into as good a stayer as Kuvera, who carried the same colours a few years back, Pandava will still be nominated for the Melbourne Cup when entries close next month. It is merely a repetition of the old safety principle in racing. Pandava can easily be withdrawn from the Cup; but, if he should prove unexpectedly that he is a stayer, a fortune could not put him in the big race once nomination day is passed. “There's no saying how a horse will improve from two to three years,” said Mr. \V. J. Smith, “A brilliant youngster sometimes loses his pa-, e with age but gains in stamina. So far, Pandava does not look like a stayer, but we have to give him his chance.” Pandava's extreme brilliance, however, will not be jeopardised as a three-year-old. If the colt gives a definite intimation that he is not a stayer, even the Derbies will be passed over, and he will be confined to distances within his compass.
