THE OPENING DAY AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP LONDON, May 23. In the golf amateur championship, being played l his year at Troon, tlu Australian, H. Hatlersley, drove the first ball in a steady diizzle which later got worse. Hatlersley beat Alec Hill, a member of the Walker Cup team of 1937, 2 up. The British Walker Cup membex, Kyle, b ?at Nettlefold (Australia), 5 and 4; Ryan (Australia) beat F. Lucas, 2 up; R. MacGregor beat Rundle (Australia), 9 and 7; McKay (Australia) beat MacDonald, 3 and 1; Sweeney, holder of the title, beat J. Hordern, 4 and 2. Other winners include the American R. G. Smith, Ouimet, Goodman, Kocsis, Marvin Ward, Ray Billows and the Canadian champion, Ross Someiville, all of whom scored impressive victories. (Ouimet is the non-playing captain of this year's Walker Cup team. Ol the American winners mentioned Reynolds Smith (Texas), J. Goodma.l (Nebraska), C. Kocsis ‘Michigan?, Ward (Washington), and Billows (New York) are members of the Walker Cup team). Lucas opened stronger than Ryan, but the latter squared the fourth, and won the fifth. They were all-square at the turn, and still square at the sixteenth.
