LABOUR AND CITIZENS V _ EACH SECTION REPRESENTED BY SIX t a LABOUR GAINS ON HARBOUR AND POWER BOARDS Municipal and local body elections were held throughout New Zealand yesterday and comparatively keen interest was taken, not only in Wanganui City but in the country areas as well. In Wanganui tin’ Mayoral issue lesulteil in a substantial victory for the sitting Mayor (Mr. \\ .1. Kogers, Labour', who polled 6846 votes to 31»45 polled by his Citizens’ League opponent (Mr. G. H. Trott ', thus gaining a majority of 3825 in a total poll of approximately 9939. It was not so large a poll as recorded in 1935. when the valid voh s east totalled 10.477. Details of yesterday's voting were as follows:’W. .1, Rogers I 6*82 G. H. Trott << 305, Informal ■>' The only booth which gave Mr. 1 rott a majority was St. John's Hill, where the polling was: Trott 204. Rogers 90. The issue was elose at the Baptist Schoolroom (Ingestre Street l : Kogers 90. Trott BS. At Richardson’s Store the voting was: Rogers 172. Trott 149. Dune Hill ranked next best for Mi-. Trott, the voting being: Rogers 100. Trott <4. At the Drill Hall the majority for Mr. Rogers was .>O-!. the voting being: Kogers 1942. Trott 1439. At every other booth the majority for the sitting Mayor was substantial. CITY COUNCIL ELECTION On the preliminary counting last night the new Wanganui City Council had six of the Citizens’ League members on it and six Labour members. The voting was distinctly mixed, in that while Mr. J. .1. Scott, one of the leading Labourites of the city, topped the poll, Mr. D. AV. Earle, one of the younger members of thc'Citizens’ League and chairman of the National Party executive in the city. <-ame next. Two city councillors lost their seats. Messis. G. Bennett and A. E. Halligan, both members of the Citizens’ League. Messrs. O. Hales. J. Siddells. and «L -I. Scott retained their seats. Members elected to the City Council for the first time were Messrs. D. AV. Earle. <’. N. Armstrong. R. E. Cuthbertson, and L. AV. Chisholm Citizens’ League) and Messrs. G. I’. Hawkins. S. J. Harris. A. AV. Seoullar. I\. Lawrence and AV. Searle.
