The inquiry into the cause of the crash opened at the scene of the fatality to-day, when the wreckage was inspected by Squadron Leader Olson, officer in charge of the Hobsonville Air Base, and Mr. F. Farrell, assistant inspector of aircraft for the Air Department at Wellington, and officers of Union Airways. No statement was made as the inspection is still proceeding. Mr. F. Maurice Clarke, manager of Union Airways, Mr. L. Mangham, chief engineer, and Commander Blythe, chief pilot, both of Union Airways, arrived by the liner Kuaka from Wellington to-day and were present at the inspection. The Kuaka also brought several passengers from Wellington, Palmerston North and New Plymouth, including women and a young girl. Lockheed airliner at Mange, e or i Tuesday will be the subject of an investigation by a board uf inquiry presided over by a stipendiary magistrate. The Minister in Charge of Aviation, Hon. F. Jones, said this evening that a report would first he obtained from the Inspector of Air Accidents and that then, following the usuai practice in cases of aviation fatalities, a board of inquiry would bo sot up in due course. The board would consist of a magistrate and two assessors appointed by the Minister, one of whom would be selected from a panel oi names submitted by the Air Pilots’ Guild.
