LAST MEETING OF PRESENT CITY COUNCIL KLLOGISTIC SPEECHES MADE The present Wanganui City Council ’ met for the last time yesterday afterI noon. Elections take place next Wedi nesday and it is known that a practically new council will assume office, in that .seven out of the 12 sitting councillors arc not seeking re-elec-tion. "We have come to a marking off period in the history of our civic government,’’ said the Mayor (Mr VV. J. Rogers). "Me are here to-day to say farewell. There is no sadness about it, but possibly there is a tinge ot regret in the minds of those who are not seeing re-election.’’ His Worship paid tribute to those councillors each in turn: Cr. J. Robertson, elected in 1927 and served for nine continuous years; Cr. J. D. Crowley, elected in J 931 and served |seven years continuously; Cr. G. i. j Jones, elected in 1931 and served for seven years; Cr, T. L. Sperring and Cr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P., both elected in 1935 and served for three years. The councillors named replied and appropriately thanked His Worship for his expressions. Cr. G. H. Trott, who, seeking Mayoral honours and thereby is precluded from standing lor re-election as a councillor, Cr. J. Siddells (chairman of the Opera House and library committee), Cr. A. E. Halligan (chaiiman of the tramways , committee), and Cr. G. E. Bennett also spoke, anc. thanked His Worship for the cour tesy he had extended in debate. I The Mayor, retiring councillors ano Messrs Trott and Siddells all eulogised the city staff, referring to lhe executive officers and the manner in which they administered the wishes of the council from year to year.
